Thriving Marine Economy

Shangdong's rich marine resources: Shandong has 159,000 sq.km of sea area and 3,345 km of coastline, accounting for one-sixth of the country.

Its marine economy steadily ranks second in the country.

As of the first half of 2022, the gross marine product reached RMB 1.49 trillion; the added value of six industries such as marine bio-medicine ranked first in China; the national marine ranching demonstration area accounted for nearly 40% of the country; the excellent rate of water quality in coastal waters remained stable and progressive. The advantages of marine resources are being transformed into the advantages of high-quality development.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Shandong Provincial Government jointly built the National Marine Comprehensive Experimental Site (Weihai), which was listed and operated. The National Deep-sea Gene Bank, National Deep-sea Data Center, National Deep-sea Specimen Sample Repository, and China Ocean Engineering Research Institute were established in Qingdao.

Shandong makes solid progress in developing a strong maritime province. With the high-quality development of the marine economy, 41 seawater desalination projects have been completed, with a daily production capacity of 451,000 tons; 5 new national marine ranching demonstration areas have been added, with a total of 59, accounting for 39.3% of the country.

In the first half of 2022, Shandong's coastal ports completed a total cargo throughput of 940 million tons, leaping into first place among all coastal provinces in China, with a year-on-year increase of 5.5%; the total container throughput reached 18.21 million TEUs, up 8.0% year on year, 5.4 % and 5% higher than the national average growth rate, respectively.

The province's imports and exports to countries and regions participating in RCEP and the Belt and Road Initiative increased by 23.4% and 37.8% respectively.
